Kolkata: In a major breakthrough police arrested a gang of dacoits on Thursday early morning in connection with a robbery in a petrol pump at Ranaghat in Nadia.
It may be recalled that the accused had looted a large amount of cash from the petrol pump.
Police have recovered Rs 43.49 lakh of stolen cash. Two firearms were also seized from them.
Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid in a hideout in Nadia on Thursday morning.
Realising that the police have conducted a raid, the accused attempted to flee. The police chased them for around a kilometre and caught all three of them.
A police officer said that the accused had been moving from one hideout to another to avoid getting arrested. They had failed to move out of Nadia for certain reasons.
As a result they had also failed to escape with the money that they had taken away from the petrol pump.
The police had identified the accused after watching footages of CCTV cameras installed in the petrol pump. They had also taken down the description of the accused from employees of the petrol pump who were witnesses to the incident.
The police are also trying to know whether the accused were involved in other cases of dacoity as well. The police initiated interrogating them to get the whereabouts of other members of the gang.
The police are also trying to find out the person from the locality who had helped them carry out the entire operation.
The police suspect that it is not possible for them to carry out the operation without the help of some local people. The police also came to know that the accused had done a recce of the place quite a few times before raiding the petrol pump.
