Three arrested on charges of raping woman near Park Circus

Kolkata: Police on Thursday have arrested three youth on charges of raping a woman. The incident took place near railway tracks between Park Circus and Gurudas halt station on Wednesday night.

Police said the victim, who stays in a nearby shanty, went to visit the toilet in the area on Thursday night.

Three youth, aged between 23-25 years, noticed the woman going to the place. Within a few minutes, they pounced on the victim and allegedly gang raped her.

The victim was lying on the spot with injuries on her body. As she did not return home, her family members started a search operation in the area and later found her near the railway tracks. She was immediately rushed to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), where various tests were performed on the patient.

According to a preliminary investigation, it is suspected the she had been raped. Some injuries were also found in various parts of her body.

According to the hospital sources, the victim is yet to recover the trauma that she had gone through. She has been undergoing treatment. Police have also recorded the statements of the victim in this regard.

The family members of the victim lodged a complaint at the local police station on the basis of which police have started a probe.

After starting a probe, police arrested three youth - Bapi Mondal, Indrajit Singh and Sanjit Patra. The investigators are interrogating them in this connection.

According to police, the arrested youth are local residents who kept a tab on the woman. Police also suspect that they observed that the victim often comes out of her house during night.

Police are investigating if it was a pre-planned incident. A detailed probe has been initiated.
