Tension at Dum Dum hospital after patient's death

Kolkata: A mob on early Sunday morning went on rampage ransacking a portion of the Dum Dum Municipal Hospital triggering tension among patients who are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The family members and some locals became agitated after a patient died at the hospital. The family members, however, claimed that the patient died of negligence. Police had to resort to lathi-charge to pacify the mob. The incident led to the disruption of health services in the municipal hospital. A scuffle also broke out between the police and the victim's relatives. A huge contingent of police force rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Police have also detained some persons for creating violence.
An irate mob manhandled staff members following the death of a patient. Some of the staff members left the hospital during the agitation. Rabin Biswas, a resident of Durganagar area in North 24-Parganas was admitted to the Dum Dum Municipal Hospital with chest pain. The family members of the victim alleged that the patient remained unattended for a long time and ECG was done on the patient when his condition deteriorated. They also alleged that the patient was not properly given oxygen support when he required it the most.
His condition deteriorated on late Saturday night and he died in the hospital on early Sunday morning. The other patients admitted to the hospital had faced serious inconveniences as the staff members fled the spot following the agitation by the victim's family members. The family members demand a high-level inquiry into the death of the patient.
The hospital staff members were also scared after they were attacked. Many patients who came to the hospital with various ailments faced a difficulty as the mob was carrying out an agitation. The mob broke furniture and windowpanes. This continued till the senior police officer rushed the spot and brought the situation under control.
A similar incident of alleged medical negligence also occurred at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Sunday morning. According to police, an elderly person who was admitted to the hospital a few days back died at the hospital. Following the incident, the family members alleged medical negligence. In the both the cases the hospital authorities were unavailable for comments.
