Team of RG Kar Medical College doctors and Japanese neuro surgeons perform rare head surgery on elderly

Kolkata: RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has performed a rare neuro surgery in the head of an elderly woman without making her senseless and shedding blood.

The operation was performed with the assistance of two Japanese neuro surgeons. This is perhaps the first time in state run hospitals when foreign doctors were present during a surgery.

The patient Algeshwari Roy, a resident of Moynaguri in Jalpaiguri had severe headache and was unable to open her left eyes for the last few days. She was taken to Jalpaiguri Super Speciality hospital and after examination it was revealed that there was some sort of internal bleeding in her head.

Neuro surgeon Manoj Mahato referred her to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. It was on November 29 when the patient was admitted at RG Kar. The neuro department at RG Kar performed necessary medical tests and found that a portion of the vein inside the head of the patient had swelled and this resulted in internal bleeding. The oozing of blood was creating pressure on a certain nerve and so she was unable to open her left eye.

The doctors decided on putting a wire gauge in the swelled portion of the nerve termed as 'neuro intervention coiling' in medical parlance, which is similar in nature of putting stent after angioplasty in a heart patient. .

A medical team of seven doctors led by neuro surgeon Dinesh Jaluka was formed by the hospital and arrangements were made to procure the wire gauge from the state Health department.

Two noted Japanese neuro surgeons who had come to attend a conference at Delhi was contacted and asked to help the medical team in performing the rare surgery. They agreed and accordingly arrangements were made for their travel to the city.

Doctor Manoj Mahato who had referred her to RG Kar also came from Jalpaiguri and was present during the two-hour long operation.

"I was apprehensive about the recovery of my mother. The doctors here who performed the operation are like God to us," said Subodh Dey, the son of the elderly woman.

The doctors are hopeful that the woman will be able to open her eyes properly in less than a month.
