Taps to go dry in parts of South Kolkata on April 6

Kolkata: Filtered water supply will be temporarily stopped from Garden Reach Water Works (GRWW) on April 6, Saturday to carry out maintenance and repair work at GRWW.

Water supply to different parts of Behala, Garden Reach, Maheshtala, and parts of South Kolkata, including Borough 13, 14, 15 and some parts of Borough 11 and 16, will be suspended after 10 am on Saturday.

The supply of water will resume from the morning of April 7, Sunday, stated a notice released by the Water Supply department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Mayor Firhad Hakim said on Tuesday that the maintenance work would also include repairing of leakages in

higher diametre pipelines at a number of booster pumping stations. The booster pumping stations which will witness such maintenance work are Behala, Siriti, Daspara, Bansdroni, Prafulla Park, Senpally, Parnasree, Gandhi Maidan and Maheshtala and so supply

will be cut off from these sources too.

Filtered water supply in a large parts of North and Central Kolkata was affected on March 30 with KMC undertaking an urgent work to facilitate construction of a ventilation shaft and emergency exit for the East-West Metro at Raja Subodh Mallick Square.

Water supply was not available after 10 am on last Saturday and was restored on early Sunday. North and Central Kolkata wards 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90 and 91 under KMC along with Salt Lake and South Dum Dum Municipality had to suffer because of the suspended water supply service.

A source in the Water Supply department had said that civic body had to extract an age-old underground water pipe at the intersection of Nirmal Chandra Street and Lenin Sarani for the ventilation shaft, which was meant to be used for rapid evacuation in case of an emergency.
