Suicide attempt of 80-yr-old disrupts Metro services

Kolkata: Metro services were disrupted on Wednesday morning, when an elderly person attempted suicide by jumping in front of a Dum Dum-bound train at Mastarda Surya Sen Metro Station.
According to a communiqué by the Metro Railway authorities, "…there has been a disruption in Metro services as an elderly gentleman tried to commit suicide by jumping on the tracks as an AC rake was approaching Masterda Surya Sen Station at 8.30 this morning...the motorman had applied brakes in time and we were able to rescue the man and send him to the nearest hospital...normal services have resumed at 8.59 am."
Police said that the 80-year-old man who attempted suicide, is a resident of Sahid Nagar area.
Police came to know from people who witnessed the incident, that the man had been loitering on the platform for a few minutes before jumping in front of the train.
The alertness of the driver had helped in saving the man. The man was rescued immediately and he was taken to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was admitted with severe injuries on his head.
His family members have been informed. The police are trying to ascertain the reason that had forced the man to take the step.
The incident led to disruption of metro services. Metro services remained suspended between Kavi Subhash and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar Metro Stations from 8.30 am to 8.59 am.
Commuters were harassed as many were left waiting at different stations between Kavi Subhash and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar Metro Stations. However, the situation remained under control and commuters managed to reach their destinations as the Metro services resumed within 29 minutes of the incident.
