Step to curb dengue: Confiscated vehicles to be crushed & disposed

Kolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim said on Saturday that the Parking department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation along with Kolkata Police will confiscate and crush condemned vehicles and dispose it off as scrap material as they are affecting conservancy work and emerging as breeding ground for mosquitoes.

"I have already asked the police to pick up such condemned vehicles lying on roads or in front of police stations, use crushers to crush them and then sell them through auction process. I will also speak with Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma about this so that the process can be fast -racked,"Hakim said.

The matter came up during the Talk to Mayor programme when a resident of Jadu Colony at ward 121 in Behala called up the Mayor directly and informed him that a person, who happens to be his next door neighbor, has been keeping his personal car on

the road instead of keeping it in at a garage dump.

He complained that the conservancy staff of KMC has been unable to clean up the space in and around the car because of the act and pile of garbage has accumulated underneath adjacent to it.

The Mayor was prompt to react and instructed his officials to take immediate action. It was reported to the Mayor that some people are throwing car scraps in water bodies and dirtying them.

"Crushing such vehicles that are of no use will not only prevent mosquito larva but at the same time will keep the road clean. A clean and green Kolkata should be the focus for everyone," Hakim asserted.

Most of the calls that were made to Hakim on Saturday at the Mayor on Call programme were related to conservancy and the apprehension of the people that these sources of garbage may emerge as breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes. The calls were mainly from Behala area.
