State observes Rabindra Jayanti

Kolkata: The stage is ready to celebrate the 158th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on Thursday.

The bard was born on May 9, 1861, at Jorasanko and was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore.

In order to observe Tagore's birthday which has almost become a festival in Bengal, cultural programmes are held throughout the state. Like previous years, artistes, dancers and elocutionists will pay their tribute to Tagore through various forms of art.

A special programme will be held at Jorasanko at 6 am in which well-known Rabindra Sangeet exponents will take part. Elocutionists will recite his poems while there will be dance-drama presentations.

The Information and Cultural Affairs department will organise a mega event outside Rabindra Sadan on Gershen Lebedoff Sarani. Rabindra Sangeet exponents like Jayati Chakraborty, Agnibha Bandyopadhyay will take part in the programme among others.

The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) will host a programme to pay respect to Tagore at Rabindra Tirtha, New Town.

The programme will start at 7 am and famous Rabindra Sangeet artistes including Chitralekha Chowdhury, Ashis Bhattacharya, Abhirup Guha Thakurta, Dipak Rudra, Enakshi Chattopadhyay, Rajashree Bhattacharya, Manoj Murali Nair, Manisha Murali Nair, Anindya Narayan Biswas, Chandrabali Rudra Dutta, Swapon Shome and Sayan Bandyopadhyay will take part in the programme.

Renowned elocutionists including Pranati Thakur, Bijoylakshmi Barman, Sovan Sundar Basu, Urmila Sen, Chandrima Roy among others will take part in the mega event that will be held in the morning.

The programme in the evening will start at 5 pm in which Rabindra Sangeet will be sung followed by recitation from his poems.

HIDCO will host programmes throughout all weekends in the month of May except on May 18 and 19. Programmes will be held on June 1 and 2 too. It is expected that there will be heavy turn out at the programmes organised at Rabindra Tirtha. Rabindra Jayanti is being observed in several housing complexes in New Town, Salt Lake and also in Kolkata.

Jadavpur Laughing Club will host a programme at Jadavpur on May 9. Rabindra Sangeet exponents, elocutionists and instrumentalists will take part in the programme that will start at 6 am.

At Uttam Mancha, a programme will be held to pay tribute to Tagore.

The birth anniversary of Tagore will be observed by many schools where classes on Rabindra Sangeet, elocution and dance programmes will be held. In Bangur, Rabindra Jayanti will be held in which children will take part along with youngsters.
