State government proposes new police commissionerates at Haldia, Kharagpur

Kolkata: The state government has proposed to set up two more police commissionerates at Haldia in East Midnapore and Kharagpur in West Midnapore to ensure better policing.
After coming to power, the Mamata Banerjee-government has set up six police
commissionerates including Howrah, Asasnsol-Durgapur, Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, Siliguri and Chandernagore. Chandernagore Police
Commissionerate is the last one out of all six that has been set up.
Sources in the state secretariat said that the proposal to set up the new police commissionerates has been taken and the task to give a proper shape to the proposal has been started. It has been learnt that the final decisions that which police stations will come under the proposed police commissionerates will be taken soon. Steps to create necessary infrastructure to set up the new commissionerates will also be taken up.
According to an official, setting up of the police commissinerates will ensure proper management of road traffic in the areas that will come under its jurisdiction and it is quite crucial for further development of Haldia where there are many industries.
Haldia and Khragpur, both are the urban parts of the two districts and setting up of commissionerates will ensure installation of surveillance cameras which has now come up as a crucial tool for detecting crime.
It may be mentioned that majority places under the jurisdiction of Howrah Police Commissionerate have been brought under the surveillance of CCTVs and it helps in detecting many crimes within a short span of time. Similar steps have been taken up in other police commissionerates as well.
Moreover, soon after coming to power in 2011, the Mamata Banerjee-government had extended the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police and it had ensured better policing in the added areas.
