State DGP holds meeting with police top brass of Junglemahal districts

Kolkata: State Director General of Police Surajit Kar Purkayastha held a meeting at Durgapur with the top police brass of the three districts — Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram. The meeting was held at the office of Inspector General of Police (IG) Western Range Rajiv Mishra and was attended by police superintendents of the three districts, popularly known as Junglemahal.
"The state intelligence wing has received some inputs regarding the Maoists
trying to regroup in Junglemahal. The meeting was to have an idea of the real situation from the police top brass working in these districts and the strategy to deal with the issue," a senior police official who attended the meeting said on condition of anonymity.
There have been reports of outsiders from neighbouring states like Jharkhand creating disturbance in Birbhum with the support of the BJP before the Panchayat elections particularly during the filing of nominations.
In April, the police
had shown footages of outsiders coming to places like Mohammad Bazar and Suri in Birbhum sitting on rooftops of buses.
The police had information that these people had come into Birbhum via Dumka border. Some of them were also seen carrying BJP flags.
It may be mentioned
that though the Trinamool Congress has decimated the opposition at the Panchayat elections but the BJP has managed to make inroads in the Gram Panchayats in these three districts.
The ruling party had also alleged that outsiders had entered Purulia and Bankura and made an impact in the elections.
Apart from Mishra, Joy Biswas, Superintendent of Police, Purulia, Sukhendu Hira, SP Bankura, Amit Kumar Bharat Rathore, SP Jhargram and Commissioner of Asansol, Durgapur Police Commissionerate L N Meena attended the meeting.
