SSKM docs remove 10kg tumor from abdomen of minor

Kolkata: A team of doctors from SSKM Hospital have successfully removed a tumor weighing around 10 kg from the abdomen of a 13-year-old girl from Bansdroni in the Southern fringes of the city.

During the surgery, which lasted for a few hours, the doctors removed the huge tumor giving a fresh lease of life to the patient. The girl had first visited the outdoor department of the hospital two weeks ago, when the doctors found that she required an immediate operation.

Medical tests performed on the patient showed that the tumor was encompassing her kidney and urinary bladder. It remained in such manner that it had started affecting the kidney.

According to the doctors, the kidney would have been damaged if there was any further delay in removing the tumor.

The family members of the patient told the doctors that the tumor had increased disproportionately in the past 6-7 months, as a result of which her abdomen had started expanding.

The girl was subsequently taken to a local doctor who prescribed USG for the patient. After the USG was conducted on her, the local doctor found that she had a large tumor inside her abdomen and suggested her family members to admit the patient to a hospital.

The doctors at SSKM Hospital came to the conclusion after some clinical tests that there was fluid inside the tumor. A team of doctors led by Dr Dipnendra Sarkar conducted the surgery on Wednesday and removed the tumor.

It was a difficult task for the doctors as there was a high chance of other organs being affected while removing the tumor. During the operation, the doctors found that the tumor had originated between the fallopian tube and the ovary of the patient.

According to the doctors, the patient was unable to take food due to the large tumor. As it was encompassing the urinary bladder, she had been facing difficulties while passing urine as well.

She is showing signs of improvement now. Fluids were found inside the tumor and samples of the same were sent for biopsy which will ultimately confirm if the tumor was benign in nature or if it had any cancer germ inside.
