SRFTI girls' expulsion: 2nd day protests rock campus

Kolkata: The students' agitation continued at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) on Wednesday with the students staging demonstration outside the director's office. A police picket has been set up at the SRFTI campus as the tension was prevailing in the area. It had witnessed major tension after 14 students were expelled by the institute following friction over hostel segregation. The students have decided to continue with the agitation as the SRFTI authorities refused to listen to the charter of demands. The students said they would not withdraw agitation till the SRFTI authorities agree to their hostel segregation demand. Agitation started on Tuesday after 14 girls students who were staying at common hostel were served notice asking them to stay at ladies hostel. Director of the SRFTI, Debamitra Mitra was debarred from entering her administrative building on Tuesday. Students who took part in the agitation alleged that new rules are being thrust on them. They also alleged that the administration is coming up with "draconian rules" every other day and threatening the students constantly with expulsion from the institute. They have also alleged of fee hike and imposition of high monetary fine for shortfall in attendance and delay in submission of fee. The SRFTI authorities however alleged that the agitating students ransacked a portion of the institute as a result of which a compliant had been registered against the agitating students.
