Spotlight on poll promises in Hills

Darjeeling: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (Binay faction) TMC leaders will be shortly having discussion with various departments of the state government and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration to work out issues that they had committed to fulfill if elected.

"Though we did not get the public mandate in both the parliamentary and Assembly bypolls, as Hill residents we want to work for the development of the Hills," stated Binay Tamang, president, GJM.

Various issues pertaining to the tea gardens of North Bengal along with cinchona plantations, creation of three new sub divisions in the Kalimpong district along with upgradation of the Bijanbari block of the Darjeeling into a full fledged sub division, upgradation of Darjeeling Municipality into a corporation, creation of municipalities in Sonada and Sukhipokhari are on the to do list.

The Sarai Act that was clamped on the hotels and restaurants in the Hills by the district administration will be scrapped. A notice to this effect will shortly be issued by the district administration, said Tamang.

"We will be working in close coordination with the state government to resolve various issues of the Hills. We are committed to resolving all the problems of the Hill populace," Tamang said.
