Speeding car kills minor girl, driver arrested

Kolkata: A one-and-half-year old girl died after being hit by a speeding car on Manmohan Roy Road, under Behala police station's jurisdiction, on Friday afternoon.
The incident triggered tension among locals. The residents managed to grab the accused driver who was trying to flee. They later handed him and his vehicle over to the police.
The police said Shristi Sahu, a resident of Behala took her baby daughter, Akriti, to a nearby grocery shop. She made her daughter stand in front of the shop while she was making purchases inside. She was distracted when a speeding car with an advocate sticker hit the baby and then rammed into a wall outside the shop.
The baby suffered multiple injuries on her body. Locals rushed her to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Eye-witnesses told the police that the vehicle was being driven at a high speed and that caused the driver to lose control.
He tried to halt but was unable to stop the vehicle before hitting the baby. Residents told the police that vehicles often ply at top speeds, usually resulting in accidents.
The victim's mother fell ill after the incident and she was taken to a private hospital in Tollygunge. The police have lodged a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and have started a probe in this regard.
