Speeding buses collide on Howrah Bridge

Kolkata: A passenger was killed and five others were injured when two buses on the same route collided with each other on Howrah Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Police sources said the accident occurred around 3.20 pm as both the buses were racing to go ahead of each other.

According to police sources, both the buses of route number 73 left from Dasnagar bus stand more or less at the same time and were bound for Esplanade. The buses were speeding and one of them in an attempt to overtake the other on Howrah bridge hit it from behind. A number of passengers sustained injuries and six of them were rushed to Kolkata Medical College Hospital where one was declared brought dead.

The deceased identified as Manoj Jain (50) worked at Kankinara jute mill as an accountant. A resident of Jaliapara in Shibpur Jain was seated at the back of the bus that was hit from behind by the other. The police informed that the victim suffered multiple injuries and a severe one on his head.

Tanusree Ghosh, a resident of Uttarpara in Hooghly is still admitted while four others were discharged after treatment. "We repeatedly urged the driver not to speed up in such a reckless manner. But he did not pay heed," said Nirmal Chakraborty who was travelling in the same bus with the deceased. The police have seized both the vehicles while the driver of the killer bus fled from the spot.
