Kolkata: Sovan Chatterjee, minister for Fire and Emergency Services department on Wednesday proposed to set up one fire station in each Assembly constituency.

Chatterjee said that steps have already been taken to upgrade the fire stations. In 2016, 93 new fire tenders were purchased and the number has crossed 40 this year, he maintained.
Chatterjee said when he took over as the Member, Mayor-in-Council in charge of water in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in 2000, the infrastructure of Fire and Emergency Services department was not upto the mark. The supply of water had posed a serious threat. Over the years, the long-standing problem has been ironed out and even in the congested areas like Burrabazar, a fire station has come up.
New fire stations have come up in different areas in Kolkata and the districts. Now, the officials of the department are well trained and are reaching the spot on time. He also urged the employees to work sincerely.
"Work seriously and love your work then you can serve the people in a better way," he told the officials. Trinamool Congress leaders of Howrah including party's MP Prasun Banerjee were present at the function.
The setting up of the fire station has met a long standing demand of the people. Chatterjee sought the cooperation of people for better running of the department.
