South 24-Pgs police foil dacoity bid

Kolkata: South 24-Parganas police have foiled an attempt of dacoity at Ghatakpur area under Usti police station and arrested four criminals.
Police have also seized a firearm, a dagger, an iron rod and four live bombs. The accused had assembled on Hatugunje-Usti Road on Saturday night to carry out dacoity in some nearby areas. They came in a car that has also been seized by the police.
Police had specific information that the criminals would assemble in the area to chalk out plans and later carry out dacoity. They have been identified as Salim Mollah, Ali Hossain Mollah, Zakir Hossain Mullick and Mustakin Mullick. All four are residents of Magrahat area of South 24-Parganas. After interrogating the accused, police came to know that the miscreants also used to loot people travelling in vehicles along the road.
They used to put some objects fitted with nails on the road to puncture the tyre. As the drivers stopped their vehicle, the miscreants used to loot valuables from them.
They have admitted their crime in the face of police interrogation. According to the police, various criminal cases have been pending against the miscreants at several police stations in the districts.
In a separate incident, Bidhannagar police have arrested a youth on charges of snatching. Police said that the accused had snatched Rs 40,000 and a gold chain from a person a few days ago. Police came to know form their sources that the youth, identified as Prashanta Maity, would be visiting the City Centre 2 area on Saturday. Police were posted in the area in plain clothes. They arrested him at around 11 pm on Saturday. One Tarun Pal had lodged a complaint with the New Town police, on the basis of which the police arrested him. However, they are yet to recover the valuables from him.
