Soon, city roads to be painted with alpana

Kolkata: Now, a number of roads in the city will be decked up with colourful motifs or more popularly known as alpana. The Kolkata Municipal Corpoartion (KMC) will take up this initiative by painting alpana in the Laldighi premises in BBD Bag where Dekho Re event is organised.
On the sidelines of a programme organised by the KMC's Education department, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said: "Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been very impressed after witnessing the alpana by students of Visva Bharati during her recent trip to Mukutmanipur. She has expressed her wish to explore the possibilities whether this can be done on some city roads as well. We will paint up the road in front of the venue of Dekho Re with alpana and will gradually proceed in applying the same on other roads as well."
It may be mentioned that Banerjee, while staying at a lodge in Mukutmanipur in Bankura, had received the news that some students of Visva Bharati are putting alpana in the area to woo tourists. She immediately went to the spot where it was on along with her Minister of State for Tourism Indranil Sen and called up the Mayor whether alpana can be used on Kolkata's roads. It is learnt that the civic body has decided to put different forms of alpana at prominent city roads. "We will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) regarding the matter and will submit it to the Chief Minister," a senior KMC official said.
During the Under-17 Fifa World Cup, the alpana in front of Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan had received huge accolades from foreign visitors who were highly impressed with the artwork.
