Soon, Belgharia, Kalyani E-ways to be connected with elevated corridor

The state government has decided to connect Belgharia Expressway and Kalyani Expressway with an elevated corridor and the proposal to connect the expressways has been passed in the Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.

The setting up of the elevated corridor will reduce the journey by a few kilometres for those who want to take Kalyani Expressway directly from Belgharia. At present, one who takes Belgharia Expressway via Dakshineswar needs to pass through Jessore Road to take Kalyani Expressway from Nimta end and the other way to reach Kalyani Expressway is through Barrackpore Trunk Road. Again, one coming from Kolkata Airport has to take Jessore Road to reach Kalyani Expressway via Birati.

The 40-kilometre-long Kalyani Expressway that starts from Nimta in North 24-Parganas connects the city with the sattelite town Kalyani in Nadia district. It has also been planned to convert the two-lane Kalyani Expressway to a four lane one. Kalyani Expressway connects many other roads including Barasat Road in Sodepur, Kakinara-Rafipur Road, Nilgunj Road, State Highway-II and Kanchrapara-Haringhata Road. Thus, the step to connect the expressways will ensure better connectivity. Heavy vehicles from Burdwan, Hooghly and Howrah could easily avail the by-pass route to take the Kalyani Expressway at a much lesser time.

Taking Belgharia Expressway from Dakshineswar is the shortest route to reach airport if one comes from Baranagar, Belgharia and from adjoining districts including Howrah and Hooghly.
Thus, the expressway would turn out to be important for road connectivity with North Bengal as well. Vehicles for North Bengal, those pass through Belgharia Expressway, would also take the elevated corridor to reach Kalyani Expressway.
