Sons torture, throw out 85-yr-old mother for want of Rs 4 cr property

Kolkata: An elderly woman was allegedly tortured and was compelled to leave her residence on Sunday night. The octogenarian had lodged a complaint with the Garfa police station, alleging torture by her two sons and daughter-in-laws, in demand of property.
According to police sources, 85-year-old Namita Banik, a resident of Uttar Purbachal area in Garfa, has three sons and two daughters. Both her daughters are married. "For the past few years, my two elder sons have been pressurising me to sign over the property in their names. My daughter-in-laws also behave rudely with me and do not offer enough food to me. My husband had died in the year 2010 and since then, I have been subjected to mental and physical torture," the 85-year-old said.
Her elder son Dilip and his brother Arun live in the same house while another son lives elsewhere.
She alleged that she had lodged complaints at least five times at the Garfa police station but there has been no action. A few months ago, she had lodged a complaint with the Alipore Court, demanding 'maintenance cost' for her livelihood.
The court had recently ordered that her sons would pay her Rs 5,000 a month for 'maintenance', which had made situations worse for the poor lady. "I was assaulted by my sons and they threatened me of dire consequences if I do not withdraw my court complaint. I have left my house at Purbachal and now I am living with my other son," the woman said.
The Garfa police station has taken up the investigation of the case but there has been no arrests as yet.
It has been learnt that the elderly lady's husband Subal Banik had purchased a 12 cottah land a few years before his death, the market price of which is nearly Rs 4 crore. It is this property, which is being demanded by her sons.
