Sleaze racket busted in South Kolkata, 14 held

KOLKATA: Kolkata police have busted a sleaze racket from the posh areas of Gariahat in South Kolkata on Tuesday night and arrested 14 persons including some sex workers.
Acting on specific information, a team of city police raided a house on 81 PC Sarkar Sarani and arrested the accused. Police came to know about the illegal activities that were going on in the house in guise of a spa centre. While the sex workers were granted bail, two agents were remanded to police custody after being produced before a city court. There were seven women among whom six were sex workers, police said. Among the rest, two were agents, two were managers and three were customers.
Anti-Human Trafficking department of Lalbazar carried out the raid and found many of them in compromising situations. The investigation revealed that the arrested sex workers, aged between 21 and 25, used to visit the flat frequently.
Some of the policemen went to the flat posing as prospective customers and caught the accused red-handed. Police have started a case under the Immoral Trafficking Act. They suspect that many others are also involved in the incident.
Cops received complaint from locals saying that certain "illegal" activities had been taking place inside the flat on the basis of which police raided the house. As per preliminary investigation, they came to know about the women from various districts visiting the flat. It may be recalled that a sleaze racket was busted from a flat in Charu market police station area five days ago, where five persons including three women had been arrested. The arrested persons were mostly sex workers. Police are conducting probe if there was any link between the two incidents.
