Six vehicles torched in Darjeeling

Darjeeling: 5 two-wheelers and a four-wheeler were torched on Thursday in the heart of Darjeeling town. Police have started investigation regarding the incident.

The incident occurred between 12.20 am to 12.40 am in Chandmari below Chowk Bazar in Darjeeling on Thursday. Three motorcycles, two scooters and a four-wheeler parked on the road in Chandmari were torched.

"A police team rushed to the spot. The local residents had already extinguished the fire. Two vehicles were totally wrecked while the others were partially damaged," stated Rahul Pandey, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling.

Senior police officers visited the spot in the morning. "Prima facie there is no political angle. It seems to be a handiwork of miscreants. We will seek help of the regional forensic experts. Investigations are on. We are considering installation of CCTVs in this area. Night patrolling has also been intensified," Pandey added.

Mayank Sharma, a resident whose bike was torched, stated that around midnight he had heard people shouting. "When I went out I saw my parked bike on fire. I tried to douse the fire with water and sand but it was already damaged. It could be the work of miscreants from outside this locality," he said.
