SI critically injured after bullet pierces head at HQ

Kolkata: A sub-inspector posted with the Criminal investigation Department (CID) suffered critical injuries after a bullet pierced his head as his service revolver went off. The incident created sensation at the CID headquarters on Tuesday morning.

The incident that took place inside the Bhawani Bhawan at around 10 am on Tuesday triggered tension among other colleagues.

Police are yet to confirm whether the victim tried to attempt suicide or it was a case of accidental firing. Preliminary investigation, however, suggests that he might have attempted suicide.

The victim, Binay Bhattacharya who was currently posted with the Barasat division of the CID was found lying on a pool of blood inside Bhawani Bhawan.

Hearing the sound of the gunshot, some of his colleagues rushed to the spot to find the victim on the floor. Bhattacharya was wreathing in pain when he was rescued by his colleagues. It was learnt that the bullet pierced his head. The victim was immediately rushed to SSKM Hospital. His condition is stated to be serious.

According to police, the service revolver of the victim was in his hand when he was found lying on the floor.

Police are looking into all possible angles behind the incident. They are also investigating if he was suffering from mental depression.

According to the SSKM sources, the patient's condition is very critical. He has been kept under constant monitoring.

It was learnt the victim had been suffering from depression for past few days over some issues.

The investigators are trying to know if he had been under any stress. The family members of the victim are also being interrogated in this connection so far.
