SER, Howrah Police create awareness on Santragachi jheel

Kolkata: South Eastern Railway and Howrah Police on Thursday organised a camp to create environment awareness about a huge waterbody at Santragachi popularly known as Santragachi Jheel.
Senior railway and police officials were present at the function. Students from different schools and NGOs working in the fields of environment also attended the programme.
South Eastern Railway along with state Forest department and Howrah Police and Howrah Municipal
Corporation have launched sustained campaigns to preserve the waterbody that covers 32 acre.
Speakers at the function urged people to look after the waterbody and ensure that nobody throws garbage in it. The state Forest department has cleared the hyacinth and has proposed to set up a wild life conservation centre at the site. The National Green Tribunal has declared the area as "silence zone."
Santragachi Jheel is a haven for migratory birds during the winters. It is close to the Santragachi railway station. Birds from North America, Australia come during the winter. Hundreds of people from Kolkata and its neighbourhood visit the jheel during the winter. Photographers and
ornithologists from all over the country come to the area during winter to have a glimpse of the rare birds. In the past few years, the place has become a tourist destination during the winter.
