Senior officials take stock of flood-affected areas

Kolkata: Top state government officials on Wednesday held a video conference with the District Magistrates of the flood-affected areas to take stock of the situation. The monitoring cell has already been made operational at Nabanna.

The flood-like situation in some districts is a major cause of concern for the state government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had held a high-level meeting with the senior government officials issuing various instructions on Tuesday. Following her instructions, the senior officials on Wednesday wanted to get a clear picture from the District Magistrates of Malda, Murshidabad, Howrah respectively. All the DMs provided detailed information about the flood situation. People in the worst affected areas have been asked to take shelter at various rescue centres. The district administrations have kept adequate food arrangements in the rescue centres.

Durga Puja leaves of officials in the flood-affected districts may be cancelled in the wake of the situation. The monitoring cell has been keeping an eye in all the flood-affected districts.

Malda has been one of the worst hit with around 11 blocks already under water. Senior officials instructed the district administration to take stock of the embankments of various rivers in the districts. Senior police officers in the districts have been instructed to maintain peace and harmony.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore on Wednesday predicted that the intensity of rainfall may go up on Nabami and Dashami.

However, there is no prediction of heavy rain in the state during the Pujas. The city may receive intermittent rainfall on all the Durga Puja days.

A senior weather official stated that the city may receive more rainfall during the day time while at night, the intensity of the rainfall may reduce marginally. There is also a possibility of lightning and thundershowers in some of the South Bengal districts. The pandal-hoppers who are gearing up for the Puja days will have to check the weather forecast and then decide to venture out.
