Senior airport official held for Rs 100 cr scam

Kolkata: A 40-year-old official posted at Kolkata Airport was arrested in connection with a scam of Rs 100 crore.
He was arrested by the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) of Customs on Thursday evening.
Sources said that the accused Sampad Narayan Mukherjee used to work as a data entry operator at Kolkata.
Acting on a tip-off, the investigating officers picked him up and arrested him following an interrogation.
It is learnt that he was involved in smuggling of seized items at the airport. Customs often seize different items from passengers before boarding or while leaving the airport as there are restrictions on import and export of certain goods.
Investigating officers suspect that the data entry operator had a nexus with some more officials. Being the data operator, he used to enter lesser quantity of materials in the computer system than it was seized.
The remaining quantity of the materials used to get sold in the black market. He used to sell the materials to make fast money.
Investigating officers estimated that there was a scam of at least Rs 100 crore as it had been taking place for the past several days.
The investigating officers are considering the arrest of Sampad as just the tip of the iceberg and they would interrogate him further to get details about other people involved in the scam.
It may be mentioned that a couple of days ago the Central Bureau of Investigation had arrested Navneet Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Customs in Kolkata and three others on charges of illegally allowing import of items like cigarettes, steroids, hormone supplements, branded shoes, mobile phones, high-end watches, cameras, etc on the basis of false declaration about the content of the consignments.
