Seminars, quiz held on Nivedita in state schools

Kolkata: Seminars on the life and work of Sister Nivedita, coupled with speeches by teachers and students as well as quiz competitions were held in state-run, aided and sponsored schools in Bengal on Monday to mark her sesquicentennial birth anniversary which fell on October 28.
The school Education department had asked all the state-run, aided and sponsored schools to observe Nivedita's 150th birth anniversary.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is going to London to install a Blue Plaque at the house where Margaret Elizabeth Noble, later came to known as Nivedita, lived before coming to India in 1898. Banerjee also inaugurated the house on Bosepara Lane where Sister opened her school for the girls coming from middle-class families in November 1898. Swami Vivekananda and The Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi were present at the function and encouraged Nivedita.
The state government has set up a committee to celebrate her 150th birth anniversary. A year-long celebration will be held in all the districts. Ramakrishna Math and Mission began the celebration with a function which was held at the ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda on October 28. Monday was the first day of a two-day seminar on the life and works of Sister Nivedita which was organised by the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Gol Park where scholars and researchers on Nivedita, along with the monks of RKM took part. RKM has brought out several books on Nivedita including a collection of letters in two volumes by Advaita Ashrama. Eighteen hitherto unpublished letters have been incorporated in the volumes.
