SEC to announce Panchayat poll schedule today

Kolkata: The West Bengal State Election Commission is going to announce the schedule of the Panchayat elections on Saturday.
There had been speculations for the past few days that the election is going to be held in the first week of May. The notification of the election has to be issued 33 days before the day of the polls.
The state election commissioner has already held meetings with district magistrates and superintendents of police. At the all-party meeting held on Thursday, representatives of all the political parties have discussed various issues related to the polls.
With the date of the poll getting declared, all concerned officials will start taking necessary steps to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
The police will also make necessary arrangements, as forces from Kolkata Police will get deployed at various places during the polls.
This is the first time that Panchayat election is going to take place in three areas, which fall under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police. Sources said that there are areas near Kolkata Leather Complex (KLC) and Maheshtala side, where Panchayat election will take place. The areas have been brought under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police.
KLC police station was brought under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police just a few months ago. It may be recalled that the area of jurisdiction of Kolkata Police was increased, after the change of guard in the state. The added areas have been brought under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police to ensure better policing.
