Sealdah flyover opens for traffic movement after load testing

Kolkata: Vidyapati Setu, commonly known as Sealdah flyover, has been opened for vehicular movement on Sunday afternoon after completion of load testing procedure.

The flyover was closed since August 15 evening for load capacity testing by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). During the period, tram services along APC Road, M G Road, Bidhan Sarani and Lenin Sarani were either suspended or restricted.

Though it was feared that huge traffic congestion may occur, it was found that no major problem arose in and around Sealdah, during the closure of the flyover.

However, congestion did occur at Central Avenue on Friday, which was expected as vehicular traffic had increased a lot and due to heavy rain on Friday, the situation turned worse. However, no further problem occurred later on.

As the Beliaghata Main Road was left open, passengers coming from South Kolkata easily reached Sealdah railway station. Passengers who came from North Kolkata availed M G Road, Amherst Street and B B Ganguly Street in order to reach railway station as per the plan which was found to be successful.

As police made sure that no vehicles got parked on the roads using which diversions took place, vehicular movement was as smooth as normal days.
