Sanskrit College & University to increase intake in Linguistics
Kolkata: The Sanskrit College and University (SCU) is taking steps to increase its intake in Linguistics at the undergraduate level considering the opportunities in the job market.
A little more than 30 percent of the total seats in Linguistics were filled up last year.
"Linguistics has a lot of demand in foreign countries and is lucrative for the job market too. We have excellent faculty strength here. But, there is a tendency among the guardians to push their wards towards pursuing stereotyped subjects. It is an interdisciplinary language and computer has a close link with Linguistics," said Dr Arundhati Mukhopadhyay, registrar of SCU.
The online admission process will be followed as per directions of the state Higher Education department.
However, SCU will have its own help desk constituted by university officials to counsel students and guardians during undergraduate admission.
"Our university is completely different from some other old universities in the state. We have been witnessing that the guardians visit the varsity at least once and find out on their own the infrastructure and the environment of the institution before admitting their students," a senior official of the university said.
The university is all set to introduce Linguistics in the post-graduate (PG) level so that students can pursue higher studies in the subject in SCU itself. After graduation they had to go to Jadavpur University or Calcutta University for studying the subject at the PG level.
Assistant professor of Linguistics in SCU Rimi Ghosh Dastidar said if a student wants to specialise in a particular language be it Indian or Foreign he/ she will be able to grasp the language in a better way than someone who has not studied this subject at all.
"A career as a translator or an interpreter can be pursued after studying Linguistics. An expert in Linguistics is desired very much during the exercise of census survey," Ghosh added.
SCU offers BA (Hons) under Choice Based Credit System in subjects like Sanskrit, Bengali, English, Philosophy, Pali, Ancient Indian and World History, Linguistics and Traditional Oriental Learning . Online admission process for the 2019-20 academic session begins from May 29 and will end on June 10.
The transformation of Sanskrit College as The Sanskrit College and University was done by the Mamata Banerjee government through a legislative act of 2015. On June 2016, when the college started its journey as a university.
