Sandeshkhali incident: Main accused, 3 others arrested

Kolkata: North 24-Parganas police on Saturday arrested four persons, including the main accused, in connection with the murder of BJP activist in Sandeshkhali.

According to the district police among the four, the main accused Akhtar Ali has also been arrested.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that Ali had shot dead BJP activist Pradip Das. The district police have got a breakthrough in arresting the culprits who were involved in his murder.

The incident occurred at Sandeshkhali under Basirhat sub-division eight days ago. The main accused is known to be a worker of the opponent party, said local sources.

The incident had triggered a political slugfest between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP. The latter accused the district police of inaction and also held the government responsible for not doing enough to arrest the culprits.

Acting on specific information, the district police carried out raids in various parts of Sandeshkhali on early Saturday morning and arrested the accused.

The investigating officers are yet to determine the exact role the accused might have played while committing the crime. The accused were remanded to police custody after being produced before a Basirhat court later in the day.
