Rumour of children sacrifice leads to clash

Kolkata: The rumour regarding human sacrifice carried out by a tantrik at Baidyapur under Kalna Police station area in West Burdwan led to a clash between police and a section of villagers on Thursday night.
As many as six policemen were injured and 45 villagers were arrested by the police. According to sources, some adivasis led by the tantrik was performing Kali Puja at a crematorium in village Khetralpal in deep darkness.
The puja according to tradition is performed after every fifteen years. There were more than ten children who were present there while the puja was being performed.
There was a belief among a section of the local villagers that the children were there to be sacrificed and they surrounded tantrik along with his companions.
When they started questioning them they started stammering probably because their language was somewhat different to that of the villagers. An altercation broke out with the villagers thinking that the children will be slaughtered to pacify the Goddess. The news soon
reached the Kalna police station and a police team rushed to the spot. The villagers were desperate to thrash the tantrik and his companions. As the police tried to take the tantrik and his companions away, they got embroiled in a clash with the police. Six policemen were
injured but the police
managed to rescue the adivasis including the children and ultimately and took them to the police station.
"We are investigating the reason that led to the rumour. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed us to take strong action against rumour-mongers," a senior district police official said.
