Ruckus in hospital after girl dies of alleged medical negligence

Tension ran high at Cooch Behar's MJN Hospital on Tuesday morning following the death of a girl whose family members have brought up charges of medical negligence against the doctors. An agitated mob manhandled some doctors in the hospital and staged a demonstration inside the premises. The incident triggered tension among the others patients and their family members. A scuffle broke out between the family members of the victim and the policemen who reached the spot to pacify the mob.

The family members of the victim rushed her to the hospital after she attempted suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan. At around 11 am on Tuesday, the victim's family members found that the she was hanging from the ceiling fan. They rushed her to the hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. This had infuriated the family members of the girl as they claimed she was alive. They alleged that the doctors pronounced her dead without an examination.

The family members of the victim staged a demonstration inside the hospital campus and gheraoed some of the doctors alleging negligence leading to the death of the girl. They alleged that the doctors did not properly examine the victim after she was admitted to the emergency department. Without proper examination, the doctors declared her brought dead, alleged the family members.

The family members of the girl claimed that she was alive when she had been taken to the emergency ward and her life could have been saved if the doctors would have treated the patient in time. After being informed, a huge contingent of police rushed to the hospital and tried to calm down the mob. The victim's family members also clashed with the police. The incident triggered a chaos inside the hospital. Police later brought the situation under control. The hospital authorities, however, denied allegations of medical negligence saying that the victim had already died when she was taken to the hospital.

Police have started a probe into the incident and the body has been sent for autopsy.
