Road repairs will be done before Pujas: Sovan

Kolkata: Mayor Sovan Chatterjee assured all Councillors that repairing of the roads that have developed potholes due to heavy rain will be completed before the Pujas.
"We have already started repairing roads throughout the city. There has been very heavy rain this monsoon season. In some days, the average rainfall in the city have been 120 mm. We hardly received any dry spell. A number of places where we had put bitumen had been washed away in rain. In spite of adverse circumstances, we will work overnight so that all roads are repaired before the Pujas," Chatterjee said at the monthly session of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Wednesday responding to questions from two Left Councillors regarding the bad road condition in the city.
Chatterjee said that under the directions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, KMC is not exempting the roads in the city that are maintained by other agencies like the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) , Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC), Public Works Department (PWD) etc from the repair work. "This year, since the month of July , Kolkata has received 2.5 times more rainfall than normal. We have seen that life in some other metros has come to a standstill due to heavy rain. But the city's revamped drainage system has ensured water draining at rapid pace," he said.
Durga Puja is the festival during which people from other states as well as foreign countries come to the city. "We will ensure that they have a hassle-free experience," the Mayor added.
He even urged all the Councillors to keep the Roads department informed about any bad road condition in the city so that repair work can be undertaken on an urgent basis.
