Retired Navy officer employs rural youth in his IT BPO

Kolkata: Good written and oral communication skills or a bachelor's degree is not a requisite to bag a job in an IT BPO. A retired Navy officer hailing from Narayanpur village in Kankinada, North 24-Parganas has set an example by engaging rural youth such as vegetable vendors, tailors, school drop outs and even housewives to work for his IT BPO.
The BPO set up by S K Bandyopadhya in 2007 now employs as many as 42 people and only two of them are highly qualified having B Tech or similar technological knowhow. His company's turnover for the 2017 fiscal year has been Rs 60 lakh.
"I have my own way of judging whether a person is capable of doing the work for me. I do not have a look at his resume or educational qualifications. If a person has the knack and I feel that he will be able to deliver, I provide him the requisite training. Data entry, data processing and branding jobs do not need highly qualified professionals," Bandyopadhya said adding that a former TV mechanic is working as a network maintenance expert.
Bandyopadhya caters to clients in number of advanced countries across the globe. "They assign me online jobs of varied nature to be delivered within a fixed time frame and I do it," he added.
The successful entrepreneur now wants to do projects for the state government.
"I have the infrastructure ready for doubling my staff strength and I will be delighted to work for various beneficiary schemes undertaken by the state government," Bandyopadhya said
State additional chief secretary IT Debashis Sen recently paid a visit to Bandyopadhya's BPO in Kankinara. "We have told him that we are ready to provide him land at Kalyani IT Park if he wants to expand and have also informed him of a central scheme for BPO's which may be beneficial to him," a senior official of the state IT department said.
Bandyopadhya said he had started his BPO with a handful of people in 2007 after undergoing a lot of difficulties in registering himself to the Job Board and then gradually establishing contact with foreign clients for outsourcing jobs. He had retired from his Navy job in September 2002 and it took five years for him to start his new venture.
