Results of BA, B.Com and BSC out, girls outshine boys

Kolkata: Calcutta University has created a record when it comes to churning first class graduates in Arts, Science and Commerce streams.

Altogether, 5,359 students have secured first divisions this year from the three streams —BA, BSC and B. Com (Hons) — the results for which was declared on Tuesday.

The number of students who secured first division is 962 more than last year. The total number of students who have bagged second division marks is 22,737.

According to sources in the university, the total number of seats in MA, MCom and MsC in the university is 5,520. The number of seats in the university affiliated colleges that offer post graduation is 3,175.

The results this year has been published within two months after the end of examination.

The total number of students who sat for the

examination this year was 41,544.

The total students in BA were 15,114, in BSC 86,89 and in B.Com 17,741. Total first division holders for BA, BSC and B.Com are 716, 2699 and 1944, respectively.

The pass percentage of girls is higher than boys in all the three streams. The pass percentage among girls and boys in BA (Hons) is 76.77 against 71.44 for B. Com (Hons) it is 85.44 against 76.07 while for BSC(Hons) it is 70.68 against 63.24.

"The boys have a tendency to give more imporatance to career-oriented courses rather than the general courses. This was reflected in the results," said Asish Chatterjee, CU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (academic).
