Residents clash with police in Durgapur, three injured

Kolkata: Tension ran high in Durgapur late on Monday night after clash broke out between some local residents and the police personnel who reached the Faridpur area to arrest a miscreant. Three police personnel including an officer were injured in the attack. A police picket was set up in the area as the tension was prevailing on Tuesday morning. Senior police officers reached the spot on Tuesday morning to take a stock of the situation and also to oversee the law and order situation.

It was learnt that the whole incident was triggered after some BJP workers put up a lock on the main gate of a Trinamool Congress party

office. The incident had caused a political slugfest between the Trinamool Congress and BJP. Some BJP activists were allegedly involved in the incident. The district Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that the BJP activists were trying to capture their party offices.

Police personnel went to Faridpur area of Durgapur to arrest a miscreant who had been unleashing tension since the LS election results were declared. When the policemen were conducting raids some local people attacked them. The police are trying to ascertain the identity of the attackers.

The officers are also trying to confirm if the miscreants are linked to any political parties.

The district Trinamool Congress leaders however alleged that BJP backed goons were involved in the attack and demanded arrest of the culprits.
