Rescue op training for village youth under 'Apat Mitra' project

Kolkata: The West Bengal Government has taken up a project named ''Apat Mitra'' for providing training to youth in villages so that they can voluntarily support rescue operations at the time of any disaster.
Initially, the project has been started in South 24-Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts as pilot projects.
Two hundred youths are undergoing training in each of these districts. Later the project will be implemented in all the districts.
Area-specific training will be provided to volunteers, as the state has a diverse landscape with hills in the extreme north, sea in the south and forests in the western part.
So, local youth will get trained as per the requirement in their respective areas.
During an emergency, for carrying out a rescue operation, it is often found that support of local people is needed, besides the personnel of the Disaster Management Department and Fire and Emergency Services Department.
And anyway, the local people of an area are the first responders in case there is any emergency situation. So, it is always better if some of them are well-trained.
