Relief for New Town residents: App to locate empty slots for best use of parking spaces

Kolkata: Has it become a bit frustrating for you to park your vehicles in New Town because you fail to find a slot in the parking

place?

Don't worry, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is going to put in place one of the most advanced mechanisms in New Town by ensuring that not a single slot for parking is left empty.

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority is coming up with a smart parking app which will help people identify the empty slots for cars and maximum use of the parking place. The whole operation would be done through a sensor system. The new system will be felicitated by an agency which will be engaged by the NKDA.

Debashis Sen chairman of the NKDA on Wednesday said that they are planning to introduce a smart parking app only to ensure that none of the slots in a parking area remains empty. Often it was found that people face inconveniences as the empty slot could not be navigated properly. The slots at the farthest corner remain empty due to the manual parking system. He was talking at a symposium "Infrastructure Development and Management in Future Cities" organised by RCG School of Infrastructure Design and Management (RCGSIDM), IIT Kharagpur at a city hotel.

The sensor aided system will help the driver to reach to the slot demarcated for him/her. As the people at the parking places go by the toll data at the gate they cannot determine where exactly the empty slot is situated.

The new system will help people to reserve the empty slot and easily access it.

A demo has already been given by a startup company, Sen maintained.

He also said that they are bringing in new innovations to reduce the road accidents in New Town. There will be a new mechanism operated with the help of the CCTVs to identify and intercept the errant drivers. A real time alert will be delivered to the traffic sergeant in the area the accused driver is heading to.

If any irrational behavior is detected on the part of the drivers, an alert would be triggered and the details of the vehicle would be shared with the on duty traffic police officers.

Sen also reiterated how E-governance has been given a paramount importance and services are being provide to the people online.

The NKDA is also introducing online sanction of building plans which is the first in the country. Online filing of taxes would be conducted. Many graduate youths are being trained on how to help elderly persons to submit their taxes online. The youths will be provided incentives.
