Ration dealer caught while indulging in malpractices

Kolkata: A senior officer of the State Food and Supply department in West Midnapore visited a ration dealer's shop at Panskura in disguise and nailed down the dealer while he was indulging in malpractices.

Following the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's instruction, the Food and Supply department has asked its officers in the districts to crack down on ration dealers who are engaged in corrupt practices. The officers have been asked to pay surprise visits to the ration shops to check if any misappropriations are taking place.

It may be mentioned here that state Food and Supply minister Jyotipriya Mallick had paid surprise visits to various ration shops to ensure that the people do not face any difficulties while getting various items from the shops.

Steps have been taken against some ration dealers who indulge in malpractices. One of the main purposes of the surprise visits by the minister or his department official was to send across a message and check the possible offenders from hoodwinking the people.

Siraj Khan, a senior food supply department official from the district, wore a wig and went to a ration dealer shop owned by one Rampada Maji as a beneficiary.

There was a long queue outside the shop when Khan went there.

He asked the people as to why there was the long queue. One of the beneficiaries standing at the queue told him that the ration dealer Maji would come after an hour.

The officer also stood at the queue and the people were amused to see the officer with long hair. He then sought the ration card from some of them. Most of them refused to hand over their ration card. One woman came up and gave her ration card to the officer. As the officer had no ration card in his hands people started believing that he was an outsider.

The rational dealer Maji finally turned up when the queue had already got bigger. Maji started rebuking the people for not maintaining the queue properly as soon as he stepped into the shop.

The officer's turn finally came and he produced the ration card. The ration dealer misappropriated while weighing the items.

When demanded an explanation, the dealer chided the officer. The accused also asked the officer to lodge a complaint after assuming him as a beneficiary. The officer removed the wig and introduced him. He seized the eroded weights and took some necessary steps in this regard.

He was also warned of dire consequences if there is a recurrence of such incident.
