Rash Mela held at Cooch Behar

Cooch Behar: The century old Rash Mela was celebrated with usual pomp and enthusiasm this year.
Kaushick Saha, District Magistrate inaugurated the 15-day long mela on November 3.
The most attractive feature of the mela is Rasha Chakra. The 30-feet structure is made of bamboo and decorated with colourful papers and pictures of gods and goddesses affixed to it.
The mela is a classic example of communal harmony. The Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists take part in the celebrations. The Rasha Chakra is built by Muslims. The mela is organised by a Debbotar trust. People from different parts of North Bengal and Assam come to the fair every year. The mela ground is decorated with colourful lights and thousands of people belonging to different communities come to see the fair.
The mela was started by Maharaja Harendra Narayan in 1812. Maharaja Nripendra Narayan constructed the Madan Mohan temple in 1890. A special puja is done on Rash Purnima, on the full moon night which was on November 3 this year. Devotees from distant places come to see the puja.
The district administration is projecting the mela to woo tourists from all over the country.
