Three youth on Thursday were mowed down by a train while trying to save their friend who had fallen from another moving train while taking a selfie.

The railways are taking steps to create awareness among people to avoid any action that may lead to an untoward incident that often happen while taking selfies in moving trains.

The step has been taken following the death of three youth after being hit by a train in between Belur and Liluah stations in Howrah on Thursday night. The youth were running along the tracks to save their friend who had fallen on the tracks from another running train while taking a selfie.

The victims were residents of Dum Dum and the incident took place when they were returning after offering puja at Tarakeswar in Hooghly.

According to a spokesperson of the Eastern Railway, the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police always keep a watch to avoid such accidents. But people also have to be careful so that such accidents do not happen.

Crossing railway tracks while using headphones to listen to music or speaking over the phone are major problems. These often leads to accidents and now taking selfie has cropped up to be another menace that is claiming lives of people.

Thus, steps would be taken to avoid such accidents. Posters will be put up at all stations to make people aware of the outcome of using cell phones or taking selfies in a situation that may lead to an accident.

Awareness will be created through social media including Facebook and Twitter. Thus, it would help in creating awareness. The people will also be cautioned about the risks of standing near the doors of any moving train.

It may be mentioned that taking a photograph in a railway station or inside a train is prohibited. But it is not always possible to stop people from doing so.
