Ragging of girls: Students protest outside CU V-C's room

Kolkata: The sit-in demonstration by some students of Calcutta University in front of the room of the Vice-Chancellor at the College Street campus, which had begun from Wednesday, continued even on Thursday. The students were protesting against alleged inaction by the authorities after some girl students of Law Hostel of the varsity had complained of ragging. The agitating students also put up banners and posters and shouted slogans demanding strengthening of security in the hostel and punishment for the offenders. They also demanded resignation of the hostel superintendent who allegedly took no action even after the victims lodged complaints. The victims had lodged complaints against some senior boarders and members of the hostel committee. They also claimed to have informed the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee about the issue. As the agitation continued on Thursday, Banerjee did not turn up in her room in front of which the student had been sitting on demonstration. She held an important meeting elsewhere. It is learnt that she had urged the students to lift their agitation and said that he will look into the matter.
