Radio enthusiasts help elderly reunite with family

Kolkata: An elderly man admitted at Behala Vidyasagar Hospital for the last one month was united with his family based at Jangipara in Hooghly district by the West Bengal Radio Club, (WBRC) an organization of ham radio enthusiasts in the state.

The man was found aimlessly roaming on the streets a month back in a sickly condition and was admitted by Behala police to the hospital.

The man recovered after a fewdays due to treatment at the hospital but was unable to tell anything about his family and his whereabouts. He could only tell that he used to live at Udaynarayanpur in Howrah.

The hospital contacted the secretary of West Bengal Radio Club Ambarish Nag Biswas and sought his help in locating the family of the elderly

person.

The WBRC team took his photograph at Udaynarayanpur and was informed that his family had shifted to Jangipara in Hooghly district several years back. The WBRC team with the help of the local police and local ham radio enthusiast was finally able to trace his family.

His family members informed that the old man used to work at a jute mill in Shibpur, Howrah, and after the death of his wife he suffered from some sort of mental problem. He had four sons who shifted to Jangipara for pursuing tailoring business.

They wanted their father to stay with them but the former insisted to stay at Udaynarayanpur.

Initially they were in touch with him on a regular basis but gradually due to work pressure they could not be touch with him.

"It is however not clear how the old man reached Behala. He had no documents with him. The local panchayat of Kotalpur where he lived arranged for a residential

certificate on the basis of Aadhar card of his younger son Mohammad Alam. Alam came to the hospital and after necessary formalities the old man was united with his family," Nag Biswas said.
