QS India Rankings: CU, JU top among state-run universities

Kolkata: Calcutta University (CU) has topped among the state-run universities, followed by Jadavpur University (JU) in QS India Rankings 2020.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee showered praises on the two universities and wrote: "I'm happy to share with you that as per QS India Rankings 2020, University of Calcutta and Jadavpur University have secured first & second positions respectively among all Government Universities in India. My heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all." CU has bagged the 11th spot among all institutes and universities in India while JU is at the 12th position.

"This is indeed a matter of great pride for CU and will be a boost for us to progress further in academics and research in the days to come," said Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor of CU.

She added that ranking of institutions has gained importance across the globe and this recognition by an international organisation is a clear pointer to the fact that perception-wise CU is among the very best.

"We are hopeful that this will help us further in our initiatives to collaborate with other universities for academic excellence and research activities and also in getting grants in the government or private level which will be a fillip to research or other academic activities," the V-C said.

JU Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das said he was very proud about it. "We were in the 12th position in QS Indian Rankings last year and we have been able to retain the same position this year too," Das said.

State Education minister Partha Chatterjee added that the ranking of CU and JU is a recognition of Bengal's talent and the reflection of the education policy of the Mamata Banerjee government.

It may be mentioned that in the world rankings, too, CU has secured the 27th spot, while JU has bagged the 68th position.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar who is the Chancellor of both the universities tweeted: "More than 28000 institutions ranked. My congratulations to faculty and students of Calcutta University for being No. 27 and Jadavpur University No. 68. I am confident we would in togetherness march on incremental trajectory."

Among the central universities, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) dominate the list, with IIT-Bombay securing the top position and IIT-Kharagpur the fifth.

In the month of April when the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched by the ministry of Human Resource Development, CU had bagged the fifth spot while JU featured sixth among the universities in the country.

In the overall ranking of institutions across the country, CU had bagged the 12th spot while JU had come 13th.
