PWD set to engage supervisors, consultants for high-value projects

Kolkata: The state Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to engage supervisors and consultants to monitor projects valued above Rs 25 and 50 crore, respectively. The move is aimed at transparency and better quality checking during implementation of various projects.

Independent experts called 'highway project monitors' will be engaged for monitoring civil work that are valued above Rs 25 crore and upto Rs 50 crore. They will assist the engineer-in-charge in supervision of the work and check the quality during implementation of the project. Meanwhile, 'supervision consultants' would be engaged for monitoring civil work valued above Rs 50 crore.

A notification in this regard, undersigned by the Principal Secretary of PWD Arnab Roy, has been issued from Nabanna. The cost of hiring services for engaging highway project monitors would be charged from 'quality control charges' available for the work, while for the supervision consultants it will be charged from 'supervision consultancy charges'.

"The move will not only help in speeding up work but will also ensure quality. Experts will also help to solve problems, if any, through their expert opinion or suggestions," a source in the PWD said.
