Purbo Kolkata Sarbojanin uses bamboo to make pandal, goes eco-friendly

Kolkata: Purbo Kolkata Sarbojanin Durgotsav has set up its pandal and decoration with bamboo to revive traditional arts.
The pandal and decorations have been made by bamboo. The artisans are working on the pandal for the past one month and now final touches are being given. The fine work on bamboo is likely to attract visitors at this community puja that has become quite popular in the city by presenting new themes every year.
Plates made of bamboo have been built to decorate the pandal. Besides Bengal, Tripura is famous for bamboo and house decorations made of bamboo are quite common in both the states. Recently, doors, cots and even floors have been built with bamboos. Bamboo has enormous potential and through proper marketing, it can reach global buyers. Bamboos are used to manufacture various musical instruments that are used by the tribals.
Subhrokanti Lodh, a spokesman for the community puja said: "As bamboos are eco-friendly, we thought of using the natural product to create awareness about our environment," adding that "The pandal will inform people about the utility of bamboos in the field of arts and fine arts."
The state government has also stressed on eco-friendly Durga Pujas. Sovan Chatterjee, state Environment minister recently distributed eco-friendly lead-free paints among artisans of Kumartuli for the idols. The state government is planning to ban paints mixed with lead soon.
