Pressurised for job, 27-yr-old homemaker kills self

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a housewife whose body was found hanging from the ceiling inside her residential apartment at Garia Sarada Park area under Bansdroni police station on Saturday morning.

The victim has been identified as Ananya Konar (27). Police have recovered a suicide note from her room where she mentioned that she had no physical relation with her husband. The accused also imposed a diktat saying that she would not be allowed to conceive if she does not manage to get a job. It has also been learnt that he used to torture her for money. The woman had been under tremendous psychological pressure for the past few months.

On the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim's family members, police have arrested her husband Arnab Sahi. He was remanded to judicial custody after being produced before a city court on Saturday. Arnab, who is originally a resident of Burdwan married Ananya in March this year and later started living with her at their residential apartment at Sarada Park. Arnab works at a private bank.

The victim was found hanging from the ceiling on Friday morning. Arnab told the police that after he woke up he found that his wife was not by his side in bed. He then saw that the adjacent room was locked from inside. Despite repeated knocks, she did not open the door. He later broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling. He immediately called the police. Injury marks around her neck were found. Her husband told the police during interrogation that he had kept her body on the bed by cutting the scarf that she used to kill herself. After being informed, the victim's family members also rushed to the spot.

The victim's family has alleged that she was forced to commit suicide by her husband who used to torture her for money. Arnab used to pressurise her for job. He used to put pressure on her for money. She had been asked to bring money from her parental house. Birendra Nath Konar, the victim's father, lodged a complaint at the police station. The victim in her suicide note mentioned that she took the drastic step after failing to bear the torture and humiliation. Police have started a detailed probe in this regard.
