Presidency students to hold rally

Kolkata: A section of students and teachers from Presidency University will hold a rally in the city on Saturday demanding thorough investigation and punishment for those who are responsible for the death of Tania Agni, a housewife at Rajarhat who succumbed to her burn injuries in the wee hours last Friday.
Tania who had completed her MA from Presidency University wanted to pursue higher studies and complete her PhD. However, her in-laws did not let her do so and allegedly tortured her for dowry.
Some former students of the varsity and Tania's family members will also take part in the rally. "We will be raising our voice against domestic violence which a number of women are subjected to in the residences of their in-laws. We want exemplary punishment for those who are responsible for the death of Tania," a student who will take part in the rally said.
Tania's husband Iqbal Ali who is a professor of Aliah University has already been arrested by Rajarhat police on charges of abetment of suicide.
"It was a pre-planned murder. Her husband and in-laws tortured her for dowry. Why will she commit suicide leaving her two babies ?" Tania's father Sattar Gazi said. Gazi alleged that her husband and in-laws would also demand dowry from him. "He has also become involved in an extra-marital affair," Gazi alleged. Tania sustained 90 percent burn injuries and was admitted at a private hospital last Thursday where she succumbed to her injuries next morning.
