Presidency students protest over counselling fee hike

Kolkata: A section of students from Presidency University staged a demonstration in the academic building of

the varsity on Monday demanding publication of merit list for admission to Science stream. They also wanted reduction of counselling fee, which has been raised to Rs 500 from Rs 100.

"We submitted a deputation to the dean of Science, who is also the chairman of the admission committee, and he has assured us that the merit list will be published by Monday itself," said an agitating student. The agitation was led by Students Federation of India (SFI) and a few other student organisations supported them.

The counselling fees was raised from Rs 100 to Rs 500 last year and the students had protested against the decision.

The authorities assured them that the matter would be looked into. However, the fees was not reduced.

The results of the entrance test for seeking admission at undergraduate-level was announced on Saturday but no merit list was published.

The entrance examination has been conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board.

The rank cards were published on Monday but the students are in the dark about their total marks as no merit list was published. "There is no serial number on the rank card. So, students are in a dilemma about the sequence of the counseling process," a student said.
